Fishing for giant bluefin tuna can truely be a life changing experience. This typicaly consists of a day watching balloons over live bluefish. The bite is very exciting when it happens, and the ensuing battle can last for hours. You may also troll spreader bars, or tease up the fish with chum, bringing them close to the boat while trying to trick them into taking a baited hook. These fish need to be 73" or larger to harvest, providing there is open quota left. This may change as the season progresses, so again, talk with the Captain before your trip. Tuna Fishing on Cape Cod: Chasing Giants in New England Waters

Few offshore fishing experiences match the excitement of hooking a giant tuna off the coast of Cape Cod. Every year, anglers from around the world travel to Cape Cod in search of powerful bluefin tuna, one of the ocean’s most respected game fish. From explosive topwater feeds to deep battles lasting hours, tuna fishing on the Cape combines adrenaline, skill, and tradition.

Why Cape Cod Is a Tuna Hotspot

Cape Cod lies near the rich feeding grounds of the North Atlantic, where cold and warm ocean currents collide. This environment creates ideal conditions for baitfish such as:

  • Sand eels
  • Herring
  • Mackerel
  • Squid

These bait concentrations attract large schools of tuna which migrate through the region from late spring into fall

Waters east of Cape Cod and around Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary are especially productive because underwater structure and currents trap bait and create feeding zones for giant fish.

Best Time for Tuna Fishing

June–July

Early-season bluefin begin arriving around Cape Cod. School-sized fish often feed aggressively on sand eels and small bait.

August–September

Peak tuna season. Large bluefin become highly active, and surface feeds can be spectacular. Calm mornings often reveal breaking fish and diving birds.

October–November

Late-season giants may remain in offshore waters, especially during years with abundant bait.
