Black Sea Bass Fishing Off Cape Cod
Cape
Cod is famous for striped bass and bluefin tuna, but in recent years
black sea bass have become one of the most reliable and exciting
bottom fish in New England waters. Aggressive, hard-fighting, and
excellent on the table, black sea bass now attract anglers from
across the Northeast during the warmer months. From the rocky ledges
of Nantucket Sound to the wrecks south of Martha’s Vineyard, Cape
Cod offers outstanding opportunities to target these colorful fish.
The black sea bass, known scientifically as Centropristis striata,
is a structure-oriented species that thrives around wrecks, reefs,
rock piles, and hard-bottom areas. They are recognized by their dark
coloring, spiny dorsal fins, and brilliant blue highlights that
become especially vivid in larger males.
For many anglers, sea bass fishing combines the best aspects of
bottom fishing and light-tackle sportfishing. These fish hit
aggressively, fight surprisingly hard for their size, and are
plentiful when conditions are right. Their mild, flaky white meat
also makes them one of the best-eating fish in the Atlantic.
Best Time To Fish
The prime black sea bass season
off Cape Cod generally runs from late May through October. Water
temperatures play a major role in their migration patterns, with
fish moving northward into Massachusetts waters as the ocean warms.
Summer is peak season. During June, July, and August, anglers can
find large concentrations of sea bass on rocky reefs, artificial
wrecks, mussel beads, drop-offs, and offshore humps.
September and early October often produce some of the largest fish of the season
as sea bass feed heavily before migrating south for winter.
